Classics Department Student Advisors

Meet Your Departmental Student Advisors

DSAs are nominated by departments or programs. Sally knows firsthand what it’s like to be a Classics major. She is available via e-mail and at special campus events to answer your questions. DSAs do not replace academic advisors or faculty, but serve as an additional resource at K.

In 20 words or less, what is the best thing about being part of this department?
Being a part of a smaller department allows me to make close connections with my professors and peers.

What is your biggest piece of advice to first years and sophomores about getting connected to this department?
Don’t be afraid to take Classics classes! Even if it’s a new subject for you, you might find something new that you are interested in! I would say to start taking Classics classes early, but regardless of when you first get involved, it is super easy to be connected with this department.

What is something you know now that you wish you could tell your first-year self?
You still won’t know what you’re doing with your life…but that’s okay!

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned at K?
I’ve learned the value of balancing my academic and social life. Although staying on top of classes is necessary, hanging out with friends is just as important!

What has been your favorite class at K?
One of my favorite classes I’ve taken here at K was my Intermediate Greek class, where we read Lucian’s “A True Story,” one of the earliest examples of science fiction. The class was a bit daunting because it was my first time reading Greek that wasn’t from a textbook, but throughout the class, I was able to build confidence in my translation skills. Plus, it was super fun to read about civilizations on the moon and sun, epic space battles, and the strange hybrid fish-people who live inside a whale.

How have you taken advantage of the open curriculum or experienced breadth in your education?
The open curriculum has allowed me to pursue a variety of my interests. Besides Classics, I have also been able to be very involved in the Theater Department. Theater has always been a hobby of mine, and although I wanted to go in a different direction academically, it is still super easy for me to engage in theater at K! I have taken all of the theater design classes, work in the scene shop, and have participated in some capacity on most of the productions put on over the past three years.

What is your SIP?
I don’t have a solidified idea yet, but I will be writing a research SIP, specifically looking at cemeteries and grave epitaphs across time. I’ll potentially look at the local cemeteries here in Kalamazoo and compare them to ancient cemeteries.

What are your career aspirations/next steps after K?
I don’t know yet! But I loved my experience studying abroad, and hope that whatever I do post-grad will take me overseas again!

What is a random fun fact about you?
I love puzzles! Jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, minesweeper, nonograms…I love them all. (Although it does sometimes present a challenge when I have homework to do.)
